Dealing with Fibromyalgia
By Diane Duhaime
Dealing with fibromyalgia is not always easy The best way to deal with fibromyalgia includes regular exercise, good sleeping habits and eating right. Before jumping into exercising or changing your eating habits, you should always check with your doctor first to be sure the exercise and food will benefit you and not harm you. Walking and swimming are the 2 best exercises for fibromyalgia. Swimming is great because it does not put as much stress on the joints like other exercises can. Stretching exercises are also a good way to keep the muscles active. Like they say, use it or lose it! The same can be said for arthritis, which often goes along with fibromyalgia. Even on days when you are really hurting, you should try to do at least some exercises to keep your muscles in shape. My doctor sent me to physical therapy numerous times and as long as I continue to do my exercises faithfully, I am able to keep my pain level to a minimum. The moment I start slacking, and I do from time to time, the pain level starts to increase and it starts getting to the point where I don't even want to get out of bed because it hurts too much. I have to force myself to get back to doing the stretches and exercising to get my muscles back in shape again and to bring the pain level back down. I have been dealing with fibromyalgia for over 10 years now and the exercise has never failed to bring the pain level down and keep it down. At first it is really tough, because you just hurt so much, you really do not feel like moving. But the more you move, the better you begin to feel. Do not let fibromyalgia rule your life! You rule the fibromyalgia! As with anything, always check with your doctor or therapist first to be sure that the exercises are right for you and will not interfere with other medical issues you may have. The same is true for dieting or any other changes you make in your daily lifestyle. |
